Climate change and social justice are closely interlinked. The consequences of climate change threaten to further exacerbate the existing inequalities in the MENA region, leaving a significant part of the society with little to no chance on a livable future. To prevent societies from further falling apart, and to address all these social inequalities, we urgently need a socio-ecological transformation!
This was the core message of our communication campaign, which has now been running for over half a year in the MENA region. Our “Climate for Justice” campaign aimed to promote the understanding that climate change at its heart is an issue of social justice, and that we urgently need bold action and everyone's active participation in the fight for a socio-ecological change.
What such a change in the energy sector can look like has been shown to us by the Wuppertal Institute’s phase model. This energy transformation model was applied to 10 countries in the region. It contributes to a better understanding of where the energy transition processes in the respective countries are at, and offers key learnings for the whole region based on findings across the analysed countries. A comparative report of these studies will be launched soon - stay tuned!
Besides this study series, the campaign also focused on reaching a broader audience. To that purpose, a lot of audio content was created. This includes a podcast series and live discussions on Radio Al-Balad answering the following questions: What happens during climate negotiations and what role did the MENA region play in COP26 in Glasgow? What’s the difference between mitigation and adaptation to climate change and why are vulnerable communities more affected by climate change than others? How can cities become more resilient towards climate change? Which role does civil society play? How can we create more intergenerational justice? Experts and long-standing FES partners from various countries in the region contributed to giving a full picture in the answers to these questions.

In short, the “Climate for Justice” campaign did not only focus on the challenges of climate change in the MENA region, it also offered solutions for a sustainable and socially just environment and society. The solutions have been conceived, but the road to their implementation is still long. We will keep our pace in advocating for this transition, and hope to have found more supporters through the campaign. Are you with us?
