Algeria: Presentation of the FES MENA study “The Dispossessed Generation"

This study, conducted among 12,000 young people in 12 countries in the MENA region, paints a critical picture of their living conditions, marked by exclusion and precariousness. The discussion focuses on their social and political engagement, which is hampered by persistent crises and a lack of role models.

The Youth Study is the result of extensive research and surveys conducted among 12,000 young people aged 16 to 30 in the MENA region. It comprises four main chapters that provide a fairly critical overview of the socio-economic conditions of young people. The participating countries include Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Sudan, Syria, and Tunisia. The meeting is moderated by Friederike Stolleis, advisor at FES Berlin, and Khadidja Boussaïd, urban sociologist and researcher at CREAD. Given that the study covers a wide range of topics related to the situation of young people in the region, we have chosen to focus our discussion solely on the social and political engagement of this youth.  Overall, the study reflects the difficulty young people have in finding their bearings for better social integration, whether economically, socially, or even politically. Throughout the region, young people are facing multiple crises, preventing any expression of this often marginalized and vulnerable group.
