Socially Just Reconstruction

Several countries in the MENA region, notably Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya, have experienced and are unfortunately still experiencing armed conflicts and war. These countries have suffered enormous destructions to infrastructure, housing and social capital. After the end of major armed confrontations, efforts to reconstruction will soon begin to take shape. Historical experience in post-war reconstruction in countries such as Lebanon has shown, that reconstruction often follows the economic interests of a narrow post-war elite.

However, to build lasting and sustainable peace in the region and to prevent further conflict, reconstruction will have to take social justice into consideration. Within this project, FES will try to mobilize and connect international and regional expertise to envision a more socially just reconstruction. Local civil society and pressure groups in donor countries will need to cooperate and exchange to push national and international decision makers to not overlook social justice during reconstruction
