وقد شارك في الاجتماع ممثلو وشركاء فريدريك إبرت المحليون من فلسطين، الأردن، لبنان، تونس، مصر والمغرب في مؤتمر ICLEI الأوروبي الثامن حول المدن المستدامة، وذلك في بلباو.
عُقد المؤتمر الأوروبي الثامن حول المدن المستدامة، المؤتمر الرائد في مجال التنمية المحلية المستدامة في أوروبا، أيام 27-29 نيسان (أبريل) 2016 في بلباو، إقليم الباسك. وقد نظمته هذا العام ICLEI وجمع كلًّا من الممثلين المحليين والإقليميين من المؤسسات الأوروبية والدولية والمنظمات المتعددة الأطراف، وباحثين وقادة الأعمال والمجتمع المدني.
قدم المؤتمر فرصة كبيرة لإجراء اتصالات بالنسبة لوفد المشاركين من فريدريك إبرت. وكان المشاركون في الوفد الممثلين الوحيدين من الدول العربية. المدن والمراكز الحضرية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط تمثل 60٪ من السكان في المنطقة. والاتجاه العالمي لزيادة التحضر سيؤثر على منطقة الشرق الأوسط في المستقبل. كما أن تغير المناخ باعتباره ظاهرة عالمية له أيضًا عواقب وخيمة على مدن منطقة الشرق الأوسط. وبالفعل، الآن أصبح على المدن التفكير في كيفية التغيير وذلك لمكافحة تغير المناخ والحد من الانبعاثات. مشاركة ممثلي مختلف المدن كان فرصة جيدة للتفكير في مستقبل الحيز الحضري في منطقة الشرق الأوسط في عصر التغير المناخي. وقد تمت مناقشة دور التحول الإيجابي للمدن، إلى مدن عادلة اجتماعيًّا وأكثر استدامة. على هامش المؤتمر، التقى المشاركون من منطقة الشرق الأوسط مع النائبة السابقة للحزب الاشتراكي الديمقراطي Lale Akgüne.
