Empowering Young Trade Unionists for a Just Transition

On December 1-2, young trade unionists from Bahrain, Algeria, Palestine, Lebanon, Morocco, Jordan, and Tunisia gathered in Istanbul for a workshop organized by the Building and Wood Workers’ International (BWI) in partnership with the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES).

The workshop aimed to equip young union members with the knowledge and tools to understand the concept of a just transition, the impact of climate change on labor markets, and the role of youth in safeguarding workers’ rights amid environmental challenges.

Participants engaged in dynamic sessions focusing on team-building, communication, and the importance of cooperation and trust in trade union work. The program highlighted the significance of just transition in addressing climate change while promoting economic and social justice for workers.

Practical activities helped develop strategic action plans tailored to the role of youth within unions. The event reaffirmed the pivotal role of young trade unionists from the region in shaping a future that balances environmental sustainability with workers’ rights and social justice.

The workshop concluded with a collective commitment to advance just transition efforts within their unions and communities, reflecting a shared determination to create a fairer and more sustainable future—especially for youth.
